A Note from the Principal
Affectionately, Friday marked what many on our staff refer to throughout the year as "the Crazy Day" (a.k.a. to students as Ultimate Challenge Day). As a culminating activity of our Take 5 programming, student teams competed against one another in a series of challenges that included Hungry Hungry Hippo (featuring helmet-clad students on scooter boards with laundry baskets), various relay races, a pie eating contest, a team trivia challenge, and more. There are a lot of moving parts to manage in order to create this opportunity for students, but I *think* you'll hear positive things if you ask your son or daughter about his or her day at school. Congratulations to our champions from the Purple team!
In order to ensure that the day was sufficiently crazy, Ultimate Challenge Day was moved completely indoors by the downpours that also created a series of water features in and around OJH and OHS. I'm guessing you may already have heard about those, but I was amazed at how quickly our service staff, students, and teachers adapted and simply went on teaching and learning. Whether directing partially dry-footed students safely around pooled areas, moving colleagues' vehicles out of harm's way, or shifting classes to unaffected classrooms, great teamwork helped us make the most of the short time we have with students on professional development half days.
Speaking of the professional day, our 7-12 staff spent the afternoon planning for students' transitions to 2019-2020. Because we apparently like to call "the Crazy Day" by several different names, we have dubbed the afternoon our "Vertical Conversations Day." Spending an hour each pairing even grade teachers up to the next odd and odd grade teachers up to the next even, this focus allows our staff to be prepared to help students successfully move into the following year. What information about this child will help you to help him? What strategies or interventions have worked for her this year? Are there traits or preferences that can help us develop next year's schedule? Within the afternoon, teachers collaborated to share specific information and strategies aimed to help well over 100 current 6th-11th students as we close out this year and move into the next.
All in all, today was a little bit crazy - but I hope you'll agree that it was a great day for OJH's current and future students!
