A Note from the Principal
Over the past few days, all of OJH's teachers have been cordially invited into my office for their annual "final summative conferences." Depending upon factors like previous evaluation ratings, experience in education, and experience in Oakwood, there are a few different formats for the components upon which these conversations and eventual ratings are based. These formats all include meetings at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year, but they are also comprised of a series of brief classroom visits throughout the year and/or full-period observations with lengthier meetings before and after to discuss aspects of lesson planning, specific student needs, classroom management, and more. In the final summative conferences, we spend perhaps 20 minutes processing the year's highlights and often transition into a discussion of goals for next school year.
Obviously, I would hope that everyone feels amazed that I am able to meet with 31 people in three days and provide feedback - albeit brief - to each one of them. I mean, how awesome am I? If you'd like to visualize me patting myself on the back, that would be much appreciated.
Hopefully the sarcasm font came through clearly on that part, but these few days each year leave me truly amazed that teachers are able to provide varying degrees of individualized feedback to 100+ students on a continuous, evolving, and frequent basis throughout the year. They navigate students' varied learning needs, experiences, absences, family situations, personalities, and more, and at least a few have probably at one point or another connected with you regarding a specific praise, question, or concern.
At OJH specifically and throughout Oakwood, we are blessed with a fantastic group of educators who care about students, provide high-level opportunities for growth, and who love what they do. I actually feel fortunate for having time set aside to meet with each of my teachers, but I think you'd agree that my accomplishment this week is much less impressive than are the people I'm evaluating.
